⚪︎A 7-inch single cut from “Café Après-midi meets Studio Ghibli,” a new cover compilation of Ghibli songs featuring 12 super-talented artists, produced by Toru Hashimoto (SUBURBIA) as supervisor and music selector, Jiro Fujita (FJD) for artwork, and Calm for mastering, all themed around the “happiness of an afternoon coffee.”
⚪︎SIDE-A: TAMTAM / No Woman, No Cry
TAMTAM, a four-member band globally acclaimed as a reggae/dub band from Tokyo, attracting attention from music listeners worldwide, not just in Japan, with releases from overseas labels, promotion by BBC and NTS Radio, and being listed in Bandcamp and Mr. Bongo's annual best-of lists. Their Ghibli song cover is "No Woman, No Cry," a Bob Marley masterpiece sung by Tina, used as an insert song in Yoshio Momose's 2002 short film "Ghiblies Episode 2."
The dreamlike soundscape, entirely processed with dub effects, is traversed by the pleasant reverberation of steelpan and that universally loved melody. This beautiful illusion blends with the rhythm of heavy bass and drums, creating a magnificent sound production that evokes sparkling comfort, truly exceptional. Among the many covers of this song, it stands as a unique masterpiece.
⚪︎SIDE-AA: Nobuyuki Nakajima / Sayonara no Natsu
Nobuyuki Nakajima, an exceptional musician and pianist who has composed numerous scores for films, TV dramas, anime, and commercials in Japan. Inspired by his encounter with Jane Birkin, he is now based in Paris and works as a music director for orchestras and productions worldwide. His Ghibli song cover is "Sayonara no Natsu" by Aoi Teshima, the theme song for Goro Miyazaki's 2011 film "From Up on Poppy Hill."
The original song, composed by Koichi Sakata, features a poignant melody and tense orchestral arrangement. For this cover, Nakajima deliberately plays it as a piano solo, at a slower tempo than the original, and with a simple yet meaningful touch in each note. This evokes a wonderful sensation of strange tenderness amidst the tension. This solitary yet melancholic sound world, where the listener becomes immersed and the performance itself seems to materialize, is a sublime gift filled with elegance from a masterful keyboardist. It's heavenly music that gently touches the heart.
⚪︎The jacket features original illustrations by Shiho Sato, a painter who works on backgrounds for Studio Ghibli films, and Shinichiro Yamada, an animator from Ghibli, with design by FJD!
